Frequently Asked Questions
What is VO2 max?▾
VO2 max (maximal oxygen uptake) is the maximum rate at which your body can use oxygen during intense exercise. It is the most accurate measure of cardiovascular fitness, measured in mL of O₂ per kg of body weight per minute.
Which method is most accurate?▾
The Rockport walk test is the most accurate of these three (±3-5 mL/kg/min). The resting HR method is quickest but least precise. Laboratory measurement on a treadmill is the gold standard.
What is a good VO2 max?▾
Average adult male: 35-45 mL/kg/min. Average adult female: 27-38 mL/kg/min. Elite endurance athletes: 70-85+ mL/kg/min. VO2 max declines about 1% per year after age 25.
